Hi Gail, Wouldn't matter... I generally try not and get them hot. If grinding, I monitor with fingers close to tip and when hot dip in water. M42 can should be able to take quite a bit of heat before it starts to anneal (soften). Here is a an old thread about them.http://www.engravingforum.com/showthread.php?t=11616
