Default Engraver Depth Gage on Ebay

Hi,

Just wanted to list this unique gage on the site for someone to pick up on.

It is a depth gage made by Chicago dial co. I already have one so someone might be interested in this unit.

It is used for measuring the depth of a trough for inlaying. Usually you cut the trough for a inlay 1/2 the size of the wire you are going to inlay. This indicator measures the depth of the cut so you know you have a consistent trough.

Measures in thou. I tried other indicators but the stylus is usully too big to get good readings. This one is perfect, since that is what it was made for.

Here is the link: Good luck

Sounds cool, and much more precise than my method of bending a small loop of wire to run along the trough.

The gauge listed is called a pit depth gauge. It is used in industrial applications to measure "pit" depth, such as a rust pit, a mark left by a tool, etc. They are readily available from machinist suppliers. Here is a link to show various types a pricing. This is just one of the places I googled up. Hope this helps anyone looking for a modern version. http://www.abqindustrial.net/store/p...d0cce028b10d53

Hi Matson,

Yes a pit gauge can be used.

But there is a difference in the " modern version"

A Pit gage has a Vee bottom to it, it will work on reading depth but the v is makes it a bit harder to use and read the gauge.

The old one has about at 1/4 inch ground flat base on the indicator not a Vee.

Thanks for the link on something newer that will work, Did you check out the price of the new gauges?? Wow..

I just love ebay for saving money...
