Thanks for posting the Colt Sheriff's Model for me Ron. I'll have this piece at the Colt Collectors Association show in Reno in October. It was done for a client who wanted a gambling theme. The opposite side has a pair of raised platinum dice on the loading gate and a gold/platinum Joker on the panel. The ivories were done by Jim Aliamo, Turnbull did the bluing and Reliable did the gold plating. It will be shown in a custom walnut case with gambling accountrements.

The client wanted me to create a scroll that inlcuded leaf and vine details - the resulting mix of scrolls and leaves was a challenge. You might notice the small berries I worked into the mix.

I received an email this morning from Mike Dubber. His is in Reno, Nevada at the Colt Collectors Association show.

Good news... This Colt Sheriff's Model "Gambler" won the "Howard Dove Award" there at the show. This award is for the best engraved gun in the CCA Show.
Congratulations Mike! :whoo:

Here are the pictures of it that Ron posted earlier in the thread...

Thanks for posting these pictures Mr. Steve and big time congrats Mr. Mike --- you certainly deserve the praise & award ! As a side note, Howard was my first apprentist. He was living and working as a stone/brick mason in Blacksburg , Va. while I lived in the northern part of the state. He contacted me asking for help & this got us together. Howard would work all day at a construction site and would practice engraving all night everyother night & still work --- that's dedication. I would like to think that Mike did somewhat the same in order to acchieve his high level of skill. Ken

Mr. Dubber,
Congratulations on your fine work and your award. You are well deserving of it and more. Keep up the good work. I plan on visiting you some day, picking your artistic brain and shooting a round of golf with you. Maybe I show you up on the tee box!

Beautiful gun Mike!

Is the grip frame brass on that or is it gold plate?

Ray

Ray: The grip frame on the Colt was gold plated. There are few places I would trust for gold plating - this work was done by:

I have been reading
Ray Clovers thread on “Finishes ” methods but this gun is shiny Black. How do you get that finish ? is it baked on or just a special French gray method ? it looks so even and nice.

Default Re: final finish

The blue/black finish on this gun is oxide blue - more often referred to as "hot Blue." It is the traditonal finish found on most production firearms. The important thing about any finish is the surface preparation prior to bluing. In this case the gun was polished prior to engraving and then hand polished after engraving. The final hand polish provides the high lustre appearance. It's not always fitting to polish to mirror bright - on highly engraved Colts it's acceptable, and on other guns, especially long guns, it certainly is not.
