Default Book, Learning Gun Engraving by Roland Baptiste

Roland has been working on a how-to techinical book about engraving guns. Today he emailed me the cover of it and a link to reduced images of the pages. I think there will be an English and French version and he is working on getting them printed. To help him somewhat determine how many to print, if you think you may be interested in purchasing one please send Roland a PM and let him know.

This link shows the pages in a reduced format.

Hi all and thanks for your comments and PM
At this time I have finished the book in french only.
I translate it in english first... I hope very soon. After why not in spanish if I found someone who can translate it but I can search.
The price isn't yet definite, I must ask the printer and see how much I must print.
It is a manual book with all technics and tools I use when I engrave and not with all technics you can found everywhere. You must do the difference ;-)
I have the experience with engraving and I try new technic too but when I think it is bad or not good for me I don't explain it because I don't like it. Maybe it will be good for an other engraver ;-)
I don't keep some secret for me ;-) I explain what I do and how to do it.
It is my first book and I have tried to explain simply the practice.
I am going to choice a spiral book because I think it will be easier to work with it on the bench.
It isn't a photo gallery book, I have an other one in my website like that;-)
I hope You have more explain about the book.
No problem I will sign it ;-)

Roland,
Can't wait to see the book...any thoughts on offering an "eBook" (electronic/pdf) version?
If you do offer an "eBook" and since I want mine signed too, maybe I can get you to sign the cover of my laptop computer
Take care and thanks again for taking time to share your knowledge and work with us.
Best regards,

Hi Archie,
You can buy the french version :-) it will be probably available on the end of the next week or next one to be sure.
it was my first idea to reduce the cost of book print and shipping but finally NO ebook because I am afraid by the copy with this style of support.
I think too it will be easier to work with a book near you than the computer.
If I must sign all computer I must do a lot of travel :-)

Roland,
I agree and understand your concern regarding copy issues / control ... and it will be easier with a hardcopy close at hand.
Unfortunately while I took French in high school and was not paying attention all the time ... so I will need to wait for the English version. Please advise me when it is ready.
Best regards,
Arch

This is the cover and introduction's book in english
It is a beginning

Descended from engravers, and as an engraver in the traditions of my ancestors, I decided to write this book to relate my experience with a revolution in the very traditions of engraving.

Each period in the history of engraving has had its evolutions. The first metal engravers were artists of illustration, working mainly with hand tools on copper with the technique of intaglio. Then came the engraver of arms, working on steel which was considerably harder than copper. It was no longer possible to softly push a tool b hand as was done on copper - the hammer and chisel became the tools by which to produce images on steel, quickly and with an equal accuracy with respect to detail as was done on copper. Then came the industrial era which required engravers to raise their productivity severalfold over what was possible solely by hand. Several new techniques were developed to engrave quickly and at an industrial rate of production. Today's industrial engraving is done using lasers, photogravure techniques, or by the use of mechanized engraving rollers and drill type instruments. This opens the way for the artistic embellishment of luxury goods by hand in order to make them unique and exceptional. In this new context, the engraver needs to adapt his art to the demands of exceptionally fine work. The use of binocular loupes and of pneumatic engraving tools becomes imperative.

In this book, it is my desire to take the reader on a journey through the world of today's engraving techniques and to look at how today's engravers create their works of art. I shall concentrate on tools and techniques that work well with my techniques and not dwell on older tools and techniques that I do not use in my work, except to briefly refer to them. For, the new tools and methods permit a much more creative enterprise due to the ability to finely control the speed of the tools themselves. The newer tools and techniques permit the engraver to create far more complex and fine images than were possible using the tools and methods of yesteryear.

Roland, your English is understandable, but if you'd like it to be in everyday English perhaps I could help. I taught English for many years.
"Learning Engraving Gun" would be "Learning Gun Engraving"

Thanks JJ
Why? Because I used it before and since I discovery the Palmcontrol I don't use hammer and chisel.
With my hammer and chisel I don't arrive to make very fine work like I can do under the microscope. You must use (if you want do that) push graver to engrave fine lines.
With my Palmcontrol and my tungsten piston I can do all. For me it is the best way to engrave and make fine work today. My philosophy is to make the best work I can.
Into the book I explain what I do and I didn't want make a bible of engraving, it is just my method of work.

JJ
I tell them: The hammer and chisel method is very slow method to learn and the technic is exactly the same than airgraver.
The difference is the tool. With H&C you must control the punch of your hammer and keep the chisel straight without movement. It is very hard to learn that fast.
When I see the beginner who come here and the result after five days, each time I found that incredible when I compare the time I have must to learn and control Hammer and chisel.
Now of course is cheaper but I think airgraver isn't to expensive when you compare with other thing like for example a digital camera or a nice TV...

Hey folks, I would like to agree with JJ... I have never used an airgraver. all of my work (I have only been engraving for about a year) has been with chisels or push gravers, so I would really like a book directed towards those skills. Which the largest factor in my choosing traditional tools is the price, I also enjoy the fact that it is more difficult so that when i can afford an airgraver I will be ahead of the learning curve. Now dont misunderstand me, I have found tons of useful information on this site. As mentioned earlier the style appears (to me) to be the same as push gravers. thanks for all of the great stuff everyone puts up its great to see some work by masters as well as beginners! Merry Christmas!

Yes the two technics are the same. Maybe a little differences. You can use the sharpening system with H&C, the rules for your hand is the same and the explanation for the cut too.
For me you lost your time to learn H&C when you want to work with airgraver. It is my conclusion and I have worked a long years with only H&C but the work with airgraver is more clean and finest with binocular.
Now you can see all famous engraver use it and like it.
Now I haven't maybe a good judgement because I knew used the H&C before... but I explain what I feel

Wow Roland, my sincere congratulations to you for your book!! I 'm very interested to buy one (a signed copy) if you are planning to translate them in English (my French is not so good, yes I feel a bit shamed for that, being a 'Belge'!). If you need a very good translator, my sister is a professional translator if you need any help (BVBA.alinea.translation@pandora.be), she learned Spanish as a 5th language too, some years ago! Greetings, Paulsph
