looking for types of flowing lines

hi ya'll,
in an effort to win the next contest, i am opening this thread on the subject of flowing lines, naturally occurring flow patterns, and the sights found in nature that inspire fellow artists as well as solve some of the problems of how to get some patterns to "blend" and "flow".
this is sure to be a hot subject as we have all pondered on it.
i have attached a pix of a natural form that has intruiging, ever-changing lines and has mixed up the work/play ratio to an indefinite point.

I don't have any pictures handy but some things that come to my mind for flowing lines that may be ones others haven't thought of include:

Sand dunes
Snow
Kansas Grasslands
Ocean swells (not surf - the swells)

I think all of these patterns are more of a background then a primary design element though, where I've seen some fine examples of engraving featuring your suggestion.

Simply look at Steve's work. I have come to the conclusion that it is the most flowing of all I have seen. I like Pedesoli's work and Fracasi's but I think Steve has a real handle on flow.

I would like to introduce my long time good friend Truk! Truk and I were roommates in college. We studied Tool and Die together but we also studied flowing lines similar to this in college, didn't we Truk? Ha Ha!
Okay... maybe we shouldn't talk about studying stories.

I think you really have something there. You have a good eye, I was looking at this image from a different perspective but your post prompted me to search for the scrolls in the image. Of course we all see things differently.

hi Gene, haah , cool , i didn't look at it quite that way either,
i was intrigued by the wrinkles of her top and skirt and the very precise affect the wind had upon the skirt, ,,,, draped on her form(which only served to aid the flow)
it was the constantly changing flow which gave an overwhelming amount of ideas for patterns, folds, waves, blended lines, shadowing, .etc,.... this is truly a compounded art form.
easily spotted now that you know what to actually look for, ,it needs to be studied further,( those college days of intense studying,,, ya right!)well i guess we did graduate.
, but, be fore-warned, these forms of art CAN stop the mind which could be detrimental to your health.
do not operate machinery, do not wistle, and do not critique it with your wife, least we be called lecherous men and given no credit for admiring the beauty.(whatever her name is,,Flo ?), stop it !, no , really, hahah ,ok now is that going too far,,,

No don't stop! You're doing good. You're not going too far, just expounding brilliantly on this 'artfilled form of beauty', or is it this 'art form filled of beauty' or maybe this 'beauty filled of art forms'???
Ahhh darn-it!! Maybe we have taken this too far, now I'm starting to sound like I may once have studied too many of those same flowing patterns myself, ha ha.

You know, even though we're laughing about it, these are the forms our deep down programming is set to like.

Gene, I'd bet a plate based on your oversketch would come out quite nice - even if no one could say quite well (without the 'inspirational' image present).

That brings up another point. Instead of just words - how about pics instead. A pic is worth how many words?

I seem to find flowing lines everywhere, I was having a beer the other day and say a Budwieser mirror that had some pretty neat flowing scroll on it. I took a napkin and copied it. Then I went into the resturant and looked at the carpet and low and behold it had a flowing floral design. It didn't hurt any to look at the waitress either.:yesnod:

The ever-indulgent wife was showing me a new top she bought - yep, nice big chunks of scroll as part of the design.

Go to a home decor place and look through the wall paper catalogs. You will find a plethora of scroll and leaf designs. Sometimes they are throwing out their old books and will give them to you. Not the chains , they can't but the smaller stores don't care.
